The drama and tragedy of Black & White
It can never be overstated, there is never a dull moment in the world that is Dancehall. The annual New Year’s Eve party, Black & White, was a prime example of this dynamic force within the Jamaican culture. In the early hours of the new year, shots rang out at Kingston’s National Arena, the venue of the eagerly anticipated calendar event. When the melee subsided one man lay dead.
However, this tragic end was only one act in the drama and excitement which played out up to that moment, with the drinks popping and selectors spinning choice tunes. From early evening the latest fashion was on parade inside the venue, with both men and women ‘flossing’ and setting the stage to ring out 2009 and welcome 2010.
