Toni confident of joining AS Roma
ROME, Italy (AP) — Luca Toni said yesterday he is “more than convinced” that he will join AS Roma from Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.
The 32-year-old Toni has been out of favour with Munich coach Louis Van Gaal since the pair fell out earlier in the season and earlier in the month Munich president Uli Hoeness said Toni could leave on a free transfer.
“We hope that things will go as well as they should and to reach a satisfactory conclusion,” Toni told radio station Centro Suono Sport yesterday. “I am more than convinced that on Jan 2 I will be at Roma.”
On Monday the striker said Roma was the only team he wants to join despite interest from clubs in Italy and England.
The Italy international hopes to use the move as a way of regaining his place in Marcello Lippi’s Italy team.
Toni hasn’t featured for the world champion since Italy’s disappointing showing at the Confederations Cup in June 2009.
“We hope to find ourselves there (at Roma) on Jan 2 and have six great months,” he said. “I am desperate for this. I want this situation to be resolved and in the end this situation has to happen.”
Since joining Bayern in 2007, Toni has scored 38 goals and helped the team to the German league and cup double in 2008.
