Sporting blank struggling August Town
Coach Paul Young made his re-entry into top flight football on a losing note, when his August Town outfit went down 0-2 to Sporting Central Academy in a Digicel Premier League game at Brancourt yesterday.
Oneke Ford scored both goals in the 34th and 80th minutes for Sporting Central who were winning consecutive games for the first time in almost two years.
The victory was also sweet revenge for Sporting who had lost the corresponding first-round fixture 0-1 and are now beating August Town for the first time. They have now moved to 24 points and are sitting comfortably in sixth position in the 12-team league.
August Town, who were reduced to ten men when Jermaine Simpson saw red in the 50th minute, remained in the gutters on 15 points.
Sporting started the game like a team possessed and should have taken the lead in the first minute when Damarly Samuels failed to finish off a beautiful move by Jermaine Christian down the left flank.
Two minutes later, Ford should have given the home team the lead when he missed the first of his many chances as he blasted a 12-yard shot wide of the frame after Javaughn Watson outpaced two defenders then played the ball into his path.
The Clarendon-based team, as usual, had the crowd eating out of their hands with their enterprising passes and off-the-ball movements and it came as no surprise when Ford tapped home a left-sided cross in the 34th minute from Christian to give his team the lead at the interval.
Sporting made the game safe in the 80th minute when Ford bundled home his second of the match to extend his team’s unbeaten run to nine games.
In another result, Boys’ Town blanked Arnett Gardens 2-0 in their south St Andrew derby courtesy of goals from George Vernal and Peter Keyes at the Collie Smith Complex.
