Coach Seixas to be buried today
THE funeral service for the late football coach and administrator Delroy Seixas will be held today at St Luke’s Church in Cross Roads at 10:00 am. Interments follows at Dovecot Cemetery in St Catherine.
Members of the football fraternity and members of other sports organisations who will be attending the funeral are encouraged to wear the team shirt of their respective institutions.
Seixas, the general secretary of the Kingston and St Andrew Master League Association (KSAMLA) since 1992, died on December 17 at the University Hospital of the West Indies after a brief illness. He was 63 years old.
Seixas was one of the elder-statesmen of the local football fraternity and played and coached extensively for over 40 years.
This included coaching positions at Waterhouse under the late Peter Cargill, as well as Xavier Gilbert; Barbican; Cavalier; Maxfield Park; Woodford Park; Mountain View, and most recently, Excelsior High School.
As a coach, Seixas won the Major League with Barbican in 2000, and led Maxfield Park to the KSAFA Syd Bartlett title in 1997-1998.
Seixas was also the assistant coach at Excelsior when they won the Manning and Walker Cups in 2004, and guided Excelsior’s “Colts” team to championship honours in 2004 and 2007. He was also a part of Excelsior’s coaching staff of the victorious Walker Cup team of 2008.
“Steo”, as he was affectionately called, was the founder, manager, and coach of Kush Masters League team which won titles in 1992 and 1999, and coached the highly successful KSAMLA All Masters at the time of his death.
As a player, Seixas represented Railway, Lucas, Real Mona, Nascimento, Woodford United, Cavalier — under the late legendary Leighton Duncan — and was a member of the KSAFA All Stars in 1973.
Seixas is survived by sons Triston, Carlos, Demitres, Adize, Damion, and Tsahai; daughter, Nicole; brothers, Basil and Trevor; and sister, Norma.
