Reid elected new WBA president
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Donalda Reid created history last Sunday after she beat Charles Stephenson, 17-14, in a close race to become the first female president of the Western Basketball Association (WBA).
Donalda, the wife of Hoopers’ coach Douglas Reid, was elected at Sunday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Montego Bay Cricket Club and will serve a two-year term.
The AGM had originally been scheduled for the previous week, but was put off due to the absence of a quorum.
Reid is a relative newcomer to the WBA but has served with Hoopers over the past two seasons as a manager, among other duties, and will have a veteran executive that includes a number of individuals who have served over the years.
Vice-presidents Deon Williams (Leagues and Operations), Khurt Comrie (Marketing and Communications) and Galton Taylor (Development) have returned, while Janett Hamilton the former Secretary is the new VP of Finance.
Deon Stern-Tingling replaced Hamilton as secretary, while Shayla McDonald as her assistant.
Sheldon Pearson, Otis Myrie and Stephen Campbell will assist the respective VPs while Stephenson will fill the role of the Immediate Past President.
The WBA season ended recently after Hoopers, the new Flow-NBL West champions lost to Manchester Pythons in the quarter-finals of the all-island play-offs.
They had won the inaugural title a few weeks earlier after seeing off Catherine Hall All-Stars 2-0 in the best-of-three finals.
Unique Ballers retained their Female Basketball League title; Railway Tigers won the Men’s Championships and will play in the NBL-West next season, while MoBay Knights won the Men’s Development League title.
