Waterhouse snare Lions in den
KENARDO Forbes scored one and set up the other, as Waterhouse’s impressive run in the Digicel Premier League continued yesterday with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Humble Lions at the Effortville Community Centre.
Kevin Lamey notched his eighth goal of the season in the fourth minute, while Forbes got his in the 49th minute. Waterhouse have now tallied 30 points for fourth place.
Kevin Mighty pulled one back in the 88th minute for Humble Lions who remained on 15 points in 10th place.
Jeffrey Maxwell, coach of the Waterhouse unit, thought that it was the experience of his team that made the difference.
“I thought that both teams struggled somewhat on the slippery surface, but we had a little bit more possession than the Humble Lions team. May be it’s because they are a young team and they were anxious to get that goal,” Maxwell said.
Humble Lions coach, Christopher Bender, said that his team was affected by lack of concentration.
“We failed to concentrate and that I think cost us at least a point. Funny enough this is the same thing that I have been speaking about”, noted Bender.
While the rain drenched surface did hamper both teams’ movement in the early stages, Waterhouse, being the more experienced team, quickly came into their own and took the game away from Humble Lions.
Before most of the fans could take their seats, Waterhouse was on the attack and it paid off when Forbes whipped in a cross from the left flank which found Lamey unmarked in the box. The veteran striker kept his cool and placed his shot to the right of Damion Crooks to give his team an early lead.
Humble Lions responded immediately through Errol Wilkie, but his 20-yard free-kick sailed over the crossbar.
Both teams then traded passes in midfield before Zico Herrera saw his 18-yard grounder ricocheted off Richard McCallum in goal for Waterhouse, but the danger was quickly averted by the defenders.
Like they did in the first half, Waterhouse extended their lead four minutes after the break, when the young Forbes rose above a Humble Lions defender to head home a Kemar Thomas free kick in the 49th minute.
Humble Lions, however, continued to press for a goal and were rewarded two minutes from time when Mighty who earlier saw two of his efforts cleared off the line scored his third goal of the season.
The dreadlock striker collected a pass from a teammate then pivoted and kick through a cluster of players past the diving McCallum.
Waterhouse’s Hugh Howell was ejected for dangerous play in the 84th minute.
