Portmore’s suffering continues in DPL
JEVAUGH’S Watson’s 42nd-minute penalty gave Sporting Central Academy a 1-0 win over former champions Portmore United in their DPL contest on Sunday at the latter’s Ferdie Neita Park fortress.
This result added salt to the wound of a miserable season for Portmore who have found themselves in the unfamiliar position in mid-pack of the points grid.
The win was a crucial result for Sporting Central, who were winning their second game in four matches, and their fourth of the season.
However, Portmore ineffectiveness in front of goal continued as they have failed to score in over 270 minutes and have found the back of the net only three times in their last 10 games.
“Football is a game that you have to score goals to win and we haven’t been scoring goals and I think that is the main problem right now,” said assistant coach Jeffrey Hewitt.
But he continued that he was confident the club has the players capable of pulling the team out of the present crisis.
“When things are not going well you tend to worry, but we know we have the ability and talented players to get us out if this spot,” he added.
The hosts took control of the midfield early in Sunday’s match-up, and after only five minutes, Bryan Bayliss played in Steven Morrissey, but goalkeeper Tristan Huntley turned his effort for a corner.
The visitors took a while to get into their stride, but came whiskers away from the lead in the 19th minute when Jermaine Christian was left unmarked on top of the box when he rifled a vicious shot just past the upright.
Marlon Allen then broke through the offside trap in the 27th minute for Sporting Central, but goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr did well to get off his line and block his effort.
Three minutes before the break, Allen who was playing on the left, latched on to a long ball out of midfield on the right and made his way past Wolry Wolfe who hauled him down inside the area. Watson expertly converted the resulting spot-kick to give the Clarendon side the advantage.
Sporting assistant coach Nigel Stewart was obviously delighted with the rare win and his team’s first over the local giants.
“We haven’t won in couple of matches now and this is the only team we have never beaten and we beat them today,” he beamed.
