Petcom event puts lid on Junior season
JAMAICA’s top two Junior tennis players Camarsh Crumbie and Sicquena Sinclair will attempt to end the year with a bang in this weekend’s final Junior event of the year, the 11th staging of the Petcom Junior Tennis Championships at the Liguanea Club.
The event also marks the 14th and final tournaments of the year in the Llockett McGregor Tennis Series, a development programme for the island’s mostly Juniors players, but which also Seniors, amateurs and professional tennis players.
Petcom’s Brand manager Craig Plunkett said the junior championships “means a lot to Petcom and we feel it is important to contribute to the development of the sport given the hard economic times”.
Tournament director McGregor noted that the Petcom tourney “has been instrumental in the development of some of our now tennis representatives… this is why we like to have long relationships with companies such as Petcom”.
Some 100 players will take part in the tournament categorised into boys and girls 18, boys and girls 16, boys and girls 14, and boys 12.
In the Boys 18, top seed Crumbie may have to contend with players such as Alex Goldson and Oshane Trail, drawn in his half of the draw while second seed Sheldon McIntosh may have to stop tough cookies such as Ramone Doyley and Lawrence Salmon.
For the Girls 18, Sinclair and second seed Shantal Blackwood will likely meet in the final, but they have to get by Michaelann Denton and Phadria Keeple, who are both eager to take cut the island’s top two junior ladies down to size.
In the Boys 16, tops seeds Alex Anderson and Rory Barrett have scores to settle while in the girls equivalent feisty Shellita Haughton will go all out to prove her point in a group that also includes Megan Viera, Kepple and second seed Sarah Orette.
