Jamaica National Open ends tonight
THE week-long Jamaica National Open Tennis Championship comes to an end tonight with top-seed Cadren Todd hoping to underline his status as the best in the Top 16 professional category.
Gordon Chuck and Richard Harris are also seeking to finish on top in the men’s class two and three respectively in the amateur sections.
In the top-16 professional competition, Todd defeated Matthew Rodriguez 6-1, 6-4 Thursday night to advance into the semi-finals while former leading national player Nicholas Malcolm, seeded number two, ousted Gary Harrison 6-4, 6-2.
Third seed Dane Vernon survived top junior Camarsh Crumbie 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 while David Goldsmith schooled John Azar 6-4, 6-2.
In other top 16 pro results, Kirk Boland got the better of Atton Burrell 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, Demar Harrison rallied to overcome Tyler Chin 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 and Dwayne Pagon overpowered Dwayne Alexander 6-3, 7-6.
Semi-finals, which began last night, will continue this morning at 10:00, with amateur finals set for 3:00 pm and professional final to begin at 6:30 pm.
Jamaica National sales manager Judy Benjamin noted her company’s partnership in the Llockett McGregor Tournament series and willingness “to support events that are geared towards enhancing the development of sports locally.
“It is our hope that the JNBS Open Tennis Championships will help to develop and refine the talents of our tennis enthusiasts; and that this training ground will inspire everyone — boys and girls, young men and women — to become better tennis players”, she added.
