Impulse Energy Drink Cup the feature today
An erstwhile disappointing field of Restricted Allowance 111 native-bred four-year-olds and upward (NW3 O/T) will seek to redress their racing standards in the $650,000 Impulse Energy Drink Cup principal feature over 1,200 metres at Caymanas Park today. First post is 12:05 pm.
Today’s 11-race is the first leg of a two-day racing carnival which ends tomorrow at Caymanas Park with a competitive and entertaining eight-race card headlined by the $715,000 Joseph Armond Memorial Cup, a Restricted Allowance 11 race for native-bred three-year-olds (NW2) over 1,820 metres and the $715,000 Richard Ashhenhiem Memorial Cup native-bred two-year-olds maiden condition race over 1,500 metres.
Also highlighting today’s card is the $786,000 Rajiv Maragh Trophy an Open Allowance dash for three-year-olds and upward over 1,100 metres. This event is expected to be a heated affair and contested by a number of inform runners that include Working Image, Vonalmighty, Forever Mine, Prince Of Peace, It Is I and the down in grade Medical Report.
However it is the Impulse feature which could produce a surprising result although the winner look fairly certain to come from at least one of seven of the 13 runners declared all things being even. Medusa a well-bred four-year-old filly who is bred for a distance of ground but seems to have an affinity for sprinting having won her last two races over such distances looks to be the one to beat having won easily over 1,100 metres on last. Her victim was none other than Minerva who will again allow her weight. However while Brian Harding will again be aboard Minerva for trainer Anthony Nunes, Medusa who is a former stable mate of Minerva will on this occasion be ridden by a less competent apprentice in Michael Grant who has replaced Doushane Gordon the leading apprentice.
The change on rider may not count for much as Medusa’s trainer Desmond Shand is a shrewd operator and with Medusa likely to come in at 47.0kg for the claiming apprentice the daughter of He’stherealthing could use her pace to good effect to get the victory.
Despite missing the break on last Minerva recovered to earn a good victory over 1,000 metres straight and the manner in which she won showed that she is in good heart and having won over 1,200 metres before in a better time than Medusa is expected to be right there when this is being decided.
Another who is expected to be around at the finish is the Calverton Brown-owned First Edition. A Law Of The Sea four-year-old grey filly she showed a lot of determination on last while running on strongly along the rail in a 1,500 metres race but only to be hindered close home by Dolla Win. First Edition was later awarded the race in the Stewards’ room after Dolla Win was subsequently disqualified. Since then Dolla Win has gone on to win.
Refreshed by trainer Paul Charlton for this and with the distance reduced the capital effort is anticipated as the daughter of Law Of The Sea has the best time in the field. Five-time champion jockey Trevor Simpson will ride.
Despite the good form of the afore mentioned runners Melford R Ward’s fit grey five-year-old horse Bunker Dust must have a serious look in. Trained by the knowledgeable Eraldo Fullerton the improving son of Outrigger went down fighting over the trip on November 7 and now much fitter is one to watch for.
