Herbert Morrison proved their worth
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison Technical proved their first round win over ISSA/KFC Western Conference high schools boys basketball Under-19 defending champions Cornwall College was no fluke after they swept the regular season series with a 61-51 win at Herbert Morrison on Wednesday.
Herbert Morrison, who had won the first meeting 62-38, improved to a perfect seven wins from seven games, while in the Under-16 meeting Cornwall hammered Herbert Morrison 70-17 to take their record to five straight wins.
The teams traded the lead in the Under-19 game, but Cornwall were let down by two low scoring quarters getting just six points in the second and eight in the crucial fourth after leading by four points at the end of the third.
Cornwall led 17-13 after the first quarter, but the home team rallied to lead by six points 29-23 at half-time but an 11-0 run midway the third quarter gave Cornwall the lead which they could not hold as they were outscored 22-8 by Herbert Morrison after Gavin Brown fouled out with under four minutes to go.
Cornwall came out the more aggressive in then third-quarter and led by Brown and high scorer Christopher Smith, scored 11 straight points to lead 43-39, but it was Herbert Morrison who were the more assertive in the fourth.
The home team opened the final quarter by outscoring Cornwall 8-2 as a three-pointer from Jamoi Richards gave them the lead for good at 47-45.
Richards led the scoring for the winners with 16 points, Jervis Hamilton had a quadruple double with 15 points, 14 rebounds, 11 steals and 11 assists; Rodeine Reid scored 14 points while Nico Campbell scored 10.
Smith led Cornwall with 15 points, Brown had a triple double before he fouled out with 13 points, 10 steals and 10 assists; Peter Michael Reid also had a triple double 10 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists as well as six blocked shots while O’Brian Shreaves scored none points.
The Under-16 game was a one-way affair with Cornwall dominating, leading 11-2 after the first-quarter and was up by 27 points at the half 34-7 and by 37 after the third-quarter 50-13.
Robert McIntosh had a triple-double to lead Cornwall College, 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists; Romaine Hinds scored 13 points while John Audley Jackson and Alex McFarlane both scored eight points each.
