God’s priceless love
PSALM 36:5, 6 and 7: “Your love, O Lord, reaches the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, Your justice like the great deep. O Lord, You preserve both man and beast. How priceless is Your unfailing love!” No single word in any language has been able to translate the word “love”. We can revert only to adjectives in an effort to express God’s love. Theologians use the word “agape” to distinguish God’s love from our varied expressions of the word which is often so loosely used.
We cannot adequately express the love of God verbally or theoretically, it can only be known experientially. God’s love is fathomless, impartial and unconditional. The Hebrew word chesed narrowly describes the word love as, “love without regard to shifting circumstances, hormones, emotional states and personal convenience”. One songwriter describes the love of God in these words, “The love of God how rich and pure, how measureless and strong.” Another writes that it is a love that will not let us go.
The apostle John expressed God’s love very simply, yet profoundly in his gospel. Chapter 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son…” I believe the most amazing thing about God’s love is how undeserving we are of His priceless love, yet He so generously gives His love with no strings attached!
Eternal Father, all we have to offer You in response to Your wonderful, amazing, exquisite, unfailing and priceless love is our hearts. Some are broken, some need healing, and some are even desperately wicked. Father, You promised that no matter what state our hearts are in, when we come to You with repentant hearts asking forgiveness, You will not turn us away. We as a nation today humbly repent of our sin and ask forgiveness so that we may be reconciled to You and Your priceless love.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
