TPC to meet with trenchant fishermen today
FALMOUTH, Trelawny – The Trelawny Parish Council is to meet today with the more than 40 fishers who operate from the Half Moon fishing beach here to further discuss their tenure at the facility.
The meeting which is the second of its kind to be held within in the last three weeks will take place at the Half Moon fishing beach in Falmouth.
At the first meeting held at the Falmouth town hall just over two weeks ago, the fishermen told the council that they were willing to develop the facility into a first-class fishing beach.
The council which claims ownership of the property has already signaled its intention to get the fishermen –who have been occupying the property for generations– off the property.
But the fishermen have vowed not to budge, arguing that they have a right to stay based on their years of tenure at the beach.
Chairman of the Trelawny Parish Council Colin Gager told the Observer West recently that the local body is desirous of developing the facility into a bathing beach.
At that time he argued that another fishing beach was not needed in Falmouth, pointing out that the recently constructed $40-million fishing village on Rodney Street can adequately accommodate the Half Moon fishers.
