WAKEFIELD, Trelawny — Double defending champions Cornwall College made a winning return to the ISSA/KFC Western Conference high schools basketball championships on Monday after a three-week break by beating Muschett High in both sections in Wakefield, Trelawny.
Despite being outscored 50-31 in the second half, Cornwall won the Under-19 game by 17 points (82-65) after cruising to a fourth straight win in the Under-16 encounter, beating the hosts by 30 points (72-42).
Cornwall are tied in the lead in the Under-16 section with Herbert Morrison, both on eight points, but Herbert Morrison have played six games, two more than Cornwall.
In the Under-19 section, Cornwall moved back in to second place on nine points from five games, three behind Herbert Morrison who have won all six so far.
Today, Cornwall will meet Herbert Morrison at Bogue and will seek to avenge their only loss in the Under-19 section so far after they went down 38-62.
On Monday, Cornwall jumped out to a big lead in the Under-19 game and led 26-7 after the first quarter and 50-15 at half-time before easing off the throttle and allowing Muschett back in the game.
Led by Jason Billings who scored a game-high 27 points, Muschett made a comeback outscoring Cornwall 20-11 in the third quarter to trail by 26 points 61-35 and won the high scoring fourth quarter 30-21 but still fell well short.
Four players scored in double figures for Cornwall College led by Christopher Smith who scored 24 points along with 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots.
Gavin Brown scored 21 points, had 12 assists and 17 steals along with seven rebounds; Peter Reid scored 11 points and grabbed 25 rebounds along with six blocked shots while Gavin Palmer had 10 points.
Kemaro Kellier scored 20 points to support Billings.
Cornwall were in control of the Under-16 game from start to finish leading 20-6 after the firstquarter, 39-17 at half-time and 50-27 after the third-quarter.
John Audley Jackson led the scoring with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals for Cornwall; Robert McIntosh scored 15 points grabbed 13 rebounds; Alex McFarlane had a triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 18 steals while Junior Chinnock scored 10 points.
Michael Burnett had 11 points to lead Muschett.
