A disappointing Sunday in the DPL
BOYS’ Town emerged the only team to secure a win in the Digicel Premier League last Sunday with a 2-1 win over Humble Lions which moved them within five points of the leader Tivoli Gardens.
In what is shaping up to be an intriguing season, Boys’ Town secured their seventh win of the campaign to move to 26 points, behind Tivoli on 31 and four behind both Harbour View and St Georges on 30 each.
An own goal in the 17th minute and a George Vernal strike three minutes from time saw off Humble Lions for which Kevin Mighty had levelled the scores in the 64th minute.
On a day when 18 yellow cards were issued and two red, all the other games ended in draws.
Champions Tivoli Gardens were held 1-1 by Sporting Central Academy at home, but were lucky to survive as captain Navion Boyd was red-carded in the 35th minute for violent conduct.
Horace Sharpe had given the league leaders the ascendancy in the 79th minute, but a minute later Jermaine Christian pulled Sporting level.
Although they dropped two points, Tivoli Gardens were still able to hold a slight lead atop the table and will face a massive away game on Sunday against fourth-placed Boys’ Town at Collie Smith Drive.
While Tivoli failed to hold onto their lead, it took a 90th-minute goal by Monthrose Phinn to secure a 1-1 draw for Harbour View to stay in touch.
Relegation favourite August Town had stunned the home team with a 54th minute goal by Kemal Mullings and looked well on their way for a long overdue win.
A disappointed August Town remained rooted to the bottom on 11 points from only two wins and five draws.
Portland-based St Georges are no longer a surprise package and are genuine title contenders after battling to a 0-0 draw with the much-improved Waterhouse.
St Georges stayed third on 30 points, six more than fifth-placed Waterhouse with 24.
Former champions Portmore United continued their indifferent form with a listless 0-0 draw at Village United to remain in sixth spot on 21 points.
Portmore are 10 points off the leaders with a lot of work to be done. So wretched are their goalscoring form that the usually potent Portmore have only found the target 10 times from 16 games that they had dropped into the clutches of Arnett Gardens just two points behind on 19 points.
Both teams will be battling for a top-six elite spot along with Rivoli United and Sporting Central Academy, both on 17 points.
The relegation fight looked set to be between three teams in Village United (14), Humble Lions (12) and August Town (11).
Of the three, Clarendon’s Humble Lions have the most potential to survive the drop especially with club chairman Mike Henry willing to spend big to keep the team up.
Trelawny’s Village and especially KSAFA’s August Town have a lot of work to do from here on.
