World AIDS Day report
LAST Tuesday, the TEENage team celebrated World AIDS Day at Devon House with the Ministry of Health and other health and advocate groups. co-hosted by the ‘fluffy’ diva Miss Kitty, Pretty Boi Floyd and the comedic duo Ity and Fancy Cat, the event was mounted to allow persons a chance to get tested, learn about HIV/AIDS and to better understand the issues surrounding discrimination against HIV-positive persons.
The day ’s events included free HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, one-on-one sessions with HIV-positive persons, a variety of booth displays, performances by the Children First group and prizes and surprises. Ending the day and definitely pleasing the crowd were the guest performers Denyque, Goddy Goddy, Chris Martin, DMajor, Chino, Assassin, Tessanne and Konshens.
Although many came out to see their favourite artistes perform, the message was not hidden as each artiste supported the theme of no discrimination for HIVpositive persons and some also reminded the student patrons of the age-old message of abstinence.
TEENage believes that this was a great initiative that needs to happen more than once a year to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and safe sex, and to get rid of the stigma associated with being HIV-positive.
