UTech Rotaract Club gives to St Augustine
ON Saturday, November 21, 2009, the Rotaract Club of University of Technology (UTech), along with the UTech International Students Association, and a few members from the St Andrew’s HSG Interact Club, made the journey to Chapelton, Clarendon to visit the St Augustine Place of Safety. St Augustine is home to approximately 25 boys between the ages of eight and 18 years.
Community Service Director, Ramon Lawrence, saw it fit to extend a helping hand to this facility and so, the Rotaract Club of UTech planned a fun day and organised donations for the home.
On the day of the event the boys were treated to football, lime and spoon relays, bun eating contests as well as chess/checkers competitions, where the club members interacted with the boys, while inspiring them in the process. After a fun-filled day, lunch was served by the club members and then the donations were handed over to the assistant manager of the boys’ home, Micheal Coward. These donations consisted of toys, food items, clothing and school supplies.
President Paul Thompson (Rotaract Club of UTech) stated that he intends to make this an annual and if possible a bi-annual visit to the home. This visit was, in the spirit of Rotary, truly beneficial to all concerned.
