Local cricket selectors to name final squad tomorrow
Jamaica’s cricket selectors will convene tomorrow to trim the current 24-man squad to 18 in preparation for the upcoming domestic fourday tournament.
That squad will then further be cut to 13 some time after the Christmas period. The panel consists of chairman of selectors Nehemiah Perry, Ephraim McCleod, Ruddy Williams and coach Junior Bennett.
The possible 18-man squad could be Tamar Lambert, Xavier Marshall, Brenton Parchment, Wavell Hinds, Danza Hyatt, Donavan Pagon, Shawn Findlay, David Bernard Jr to fill the batting positions, while Andrew Richardson should head the fastbowlers list along with Jason Dawes, Daren Powell and Andre Russell, who has also shown potential of being an effective late order batsman. Jamaica’s leading wicket-taker in last season’s competition, wrist spinner Odean Brown should also make the 18 along with left arm orthodox spinner Nikita Miller, left arm wrist-spinner Andre Dwyer and allrounder Bevan Brown.
Experienced wicketkeeper /batsman Carlton Baugh should round out the squad along with batsman Horace Miller, who can also keep wicket.
The final trial match ended in a draw at tea time yesterday as Bernard Jr’s XI finished on 149 without loss in pursuit of a victory target of 449. Hyatt and Parchment were 76 and 55 not out, respectively, when play was called off by mutual consent.
Batting for Lambert’s XI, Marshall had earlier taken his overnight score of 110 to 137 before he was run out after facing 177 balls. Tailenders Brown (39) and Richardson (28 not out) also chipped in to push Lambert’s XI second innings total to 304 and set the improbable target. Dwyer finished with four wickets for 120 runs, while allrounder Bevan Brown took three for 48 and Nkruma Bonner two for 46.
Scores in the match were: Lambert’s XI 427 and 304; Bernard Jr’s XI 283 and 149 without loss.
