Young selector takes lessons ‘from the bigger heads’
Although Dadgron Williams has been selecting for only three years, officially, he says from a child he knew that this was his destiny. He names Irie FM as his first ‘sound’ and now he plays on Taxi International, which was started by his father six years ago.
“While growing up I always wanted to be a selector,” he said. “I didn’t have a real sound to practise on, so I would put the radio on Irie FM, turn it down, chat pon the mic and then turn it up again,” he explained.
The selector-in-the-making was also an avid Stone Love fan and he would review their tapes and make mental notes.
“The bigger heads dem really know the ting, so you have to take lessons from them,” Dadgron said.
In addition to Stone Love head honcho, Winston ‘Wee Pow’ Powell, he lists selectors Tony Matterhorn, Firelinks, Richie Feelings and Bill Cosby as person whose style of selecting he admires.
“A selector’s main job is to please the crowd and to do that you have to test the waters and know the temperature. Those selectors know what songs to play and they know how to say what they say and that’s what I like about them,” he offered.
Dadgron later linked with popular Mo Bay selectors Slim Jay and Fire 20 who watched him select and told him to come on the road with them and get some experience.
Having done this, he now has full control of Taxi International and even started a Saturday night dance called In Deh Saturdays in Glendevon, St James.
“The first night only 10 people showed up, but after six months the place was buzzing and then police shut it down because there was no permit,” he explained.
He says the event, however, was a good way of marketing the sound and since then they have been getting quite a few dates.
