Burrell for Club World Cup duties
Jamaica’s football boss, Captain Horace Burrell, is expected to fly to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) state of Dubai today from South Africa for the FIFA Club World Cup tournament which kicks off on Wednesday.
Burrell will attend the tournament that seeks to crown the world champion of club football in his capacity as a member of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee chaired by Swiss lawyer Marcel Mathier.
The Jamaican has been a long-serving member of the arbitration body, having recently celebrated 16 years serving on the panel.
“It’s always a joy for me to serve football, and to be summoned for duty in Dubai is a tremendous honour,” said Burrell yesterday as he prepared to depart from Cape Town, South Africa, where he attended the FIFA 2010 South Africa World Cup draw on Friday.
Won by Manchester United last year, the FIFA Club World Cup will see seven teams in competition for the prestigious trophy. One club will represent each of the six football confederations, plus one host club from the oil rich gulf territory of the UAE.
They are Pohang Steelers (South Korea) representing AFC, TP Mazembe Englebert (Democratic Republic of Congo) of the CAF, FC Barcelona (Spain) of UEFA, Atlante Futbol Club (Mexico), the CONCACAF champions, Auckland City FC (New Zealand) of Oceana, Club Estudiantes de La Plata (Argentina) of CONMEBOL and Al Ahli FC (UAE).
