Bloomfield rallies to take Open crown
ROSE HALL, St James — Jamaica’s Johnny Bloomfield yesterday came from behind to win the LIME Jamaica Open golf title after carding a two-under par 214 over 54 holes at the Half Moon course, becoming the third person to win three Jamaica Open golf titles.
The 30-year-old Trinidad-born Bloomfield, who trailed after the first two days, shot a three-under 69 on yesterday’s final day to win by an astounding four shots after Canadian Oliver Tubb, who led after the first two days, imploded to shoot a seven-over 79 to finish with a cumulaitve two-over 218 for second.
Bloomfield, who took home the winner’s cheque of US$14,000 for his efforts, joins Mike Higuera, who won in 1972, 1974 and 1976, and Seymore Rose, as the only men to have won the title three times.
American Joe Coe was third with a three-over 219, while Jamaican Paul Warren, who was second last year, and Italian Marcello Santi, were tied on four-over 220, with Mathew Donovan next on five-over 221.
Fabian Campbell retained his amateur title after shooting an eight over 224.
After trailing the leader by six shots entering yesterday’s final round, Bloomfield got off to a fast start, birdying the first three holes on his way to a three-under 33 for the first nine holes before mixing two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine for a even par 36.
Bloomfield’s 69 was his best round of the weekend after shooting a two-over 74 on Thursday and one-under 71 Friday.
Meanwhile, despite an eagle two on the par-four fourth hole, Tubb got into trouble early and never recovered, suffering a brutal stretch between the fifth and eighth holes where he was six-over-par.
He lost his ball in the sand at the fifth and double-bogeyed as he took two shots to get out of the sand.
He then found the sand on the next two holes and had to tee off twice on the seventh after hitting his ball almost on the road, then flying the green and into the cart path on the seventh.
He shot a four-over 40 on the first nine then, three-over on the back nine.
