Asafa on track with concert launch
CONCERNED with the development of future track and field stars, former 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell on Thursday launched his concert to raise funds for his foundation.
The event, dubbed ‘A Night On Tracks’, will be staged at the National Golf Academy in New Kingston on December 20.
Powell, who claimed the 100m bronze medal at the Berlin World Championships, says he wants to do his bit to assist youngsters like fellow athlete Usain Bolt and entertainer Shaggy.
“Jamaica is really in a bad state and if you’re in a position to help out, why not do it, because most of the crime… is really the younger ones coming up who didn’t go to school and who don’t have the academic abilities,” Powell said.
The launch took place at the Sky Terrace Pool Deck at the Spanish Court Hotel and was endorsed by a number of entertainment personalities including Dean Fraser, Alaine, Cherine Anderson, and Nadine Sutherland, who will all perform for free.
Among the other artistes set to perform are Elephant Man, Wayne Marshall, Tanya Stephens, Taurus Riley, Freddie McGregor, Chris Martin and gospel group Martin Heritage.
The 26-year-old Powell, who anchored Jamaica’s sprint relay team to gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and in Berlin, thanked the artistes who jumped at the opportunity to assist this charitable venture.
“When I call them (artistes) some of them were like ‘Jah know star, the man humble eeh man!’ and some of them were just completely different from I expected and I really respect them for that and none of them said no to me.
“Some expressed sadness that they can’t be there because of prior engagements, but I’m really happy for the ones who could be here,” Powell said.
Powell also thanked corporate sponsors LIME and Supreme Ventures, who handed over cheques valued at $1,000,000 and $100,000, respectively, toward the concert.
Patrons who contribute to tickets valued between $2000 and $3,500 will get the opportunity to purchase souvenirs of Powell and get autographs.
Last month, Powell launched his foundation under the theme of “Preparing Today’s Athletes to be Tomorrow’s Champions”.
