Drivers energised for Rally Jamaica 2009
AS if there isn’t enough excitement to go around, the Petcom JMMC Rally is poised to give its dedicated fans yet another thrilling showcase as defending champion Jeffrey Panton returns to keep his eyes on the prize. It will not be easy though as he’ll be up against greats such as previous champions Gary ‘The Colone’ Gregg and Douglas ‘Hollywood’ Gore.
Set for December 4-6, the excitement levels will get to an all-time high as the crews will make a thunderous official start from JIIC’s parking lot in New Kingston.
Day 2 will see crews manoeuvering the Rio Hoe stage outside of Moneague with the action starting off at 8: 00 am. The stage is relatively unknown and should add to the excitement factor as it gives no crew an advantage. The stage will also see crews making high-speed twist and turns along the long, wide bauxite roads of Lydford Mines. This course will be run three times during the afternoon then will take the competitors across the short, fast and fun airstrip stage which is liked by every driver.
Speaking from last night’s driver’s preparation meeting at the Hilton Kingston hotel, 2005-2007 JA9 Champion Gary ‘The Colonel’ Greg pointed out that with his 4WD Ford Focus in top shape, he is definitely out for a win.
“I’m in top shape and I’m very confident of a win. My team has been working to ensure that everything is pristine; I have the right frame of mind, the fastest ride. The new stage at the Rio Hoe will definitely be a challenge though. It will be tedious and the boulders will definitely be a challenge, but I’m confident nonetheless,” he said
Also appearing rather confident, 2001 and 2003 champion Gore pointed to technique as the key to winning in his JA8 class. “It’s all about strategy and technique,” he quipped.
“My experience and talent is what will speak on the rally out there and of course I also have my Evolution 10,” he said.
Not one to be outdone, Subarusponsored driver and female dynamo Natasha ‘Chiney-Dolly’ Chang who is set to ruffle more than a few feathers in the JN 8 class with her Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5 that everyone knows as ‘Bubbles’ was equally confident and optimistic.
“What can I say, I’m ready to go on out and put on a show. I’ve worked hard, gotten my strategy together and will go out there and give it my all,” she declared.
Day 3 will keep the adrenaline pumping and will see crews speeding along the exciting spread covering areas in St Catherine including New Works, Wakefield, Koory and favourite spot along the Tru-Juice/ Bog Walk spread with the water splash, even though the water is low.
Rally Jamaica 2009 will then close off with a bang at the National Stadium with enough hype, exhilaration and energy to keep the crowds talking long after it’s all done.
