Young Reggae Girlz tackle collegians at UWI
World Cup aspirants the Young Reggae Girlz will share the spotlight with local collegiate stars at the University of the West Indies on Thursday as two of the major collegiate competitions come to a close.
At 1:00 pm the Young Girlz, who recently qualified for the CONCACAF round of the World Cup qualifiers, will face an All-Island Collegiate female team in the curtain-raiser to the Jack Anderson Trophy game between the All-Rural and the All-Urban Collegiate male teams at 3:00 pm. Both games take place at the Mona Bowl.
With only one college fielding a female football team, the Inter-Collegiate organisation decided to have invite females from the different colleges for trials after which a squad was selected. The game against the Young Girlz is part of the plan to boost female participation in the sport at the tertiary level in the country.
In addition to the football, GC Foster and UTECH will compete in the final of the Division 1 netball competition. Both teams have eight Sunshine Girls between them.
