NBA Player Profile – Kevin Garnett
Name: Kevin Garnett
Team: Boston Celtics
Position: Power Forward
NBA Statistics: 20.1 (points), 11 (rebounds), 4.3 (assists)
Background: Believe it or not, Kevin ‘KG’ Garnett is the only Boston Celtics player to ever receive the accolade of NBA Defensive Player of the Year, a feat he achieved when the team won the 2007-2008 campaign.
He was drafted as the fifth overall pick in 1995 by the Minnesota Timberwolves and was also the first player in 20 years to be drafted directly from high school. In his eight seasons to follow he led the team to the play-offs, including the Western Conference Finals in the 2003-2004 season– the year he won the league MVP Award.
These achievements are not as phenomenal as some his other accomplishments in what has been a rewarding career thus far. A remarkable feat is the seven-to-one deal which took place in his transfer from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics, in the trade-off with Timberwolves, got ‘KG’ for five players, in addition to cash considerations and Boston’s 2009 first-round draft pick. Never before has a transaction of such magnitude taken place, and to this day that has not been surpassed.
For the Timberwolves ‘KG’ was exceptional, holding the record for most points in a game (47 points), most games played, most points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals overall in a 12-year career. In SLAM magazine’s Top 50 greatest players of all time, ‘KG’ was ranked at number 30, considering the number of players to have graced the hard courts, this is a great feat.
