Video: Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart

THE sultry Alicia Keys portrays a sophisticated superhero in her music video Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart.

It is ironic that this superhero is vulnerable to something, as oftentimes they are portrayed as invincible, but in this music video it is apparent that her kryptonite is the young gentleman who she can’t do without. His absence, ‘humanises’ her character, although throughout the video she is seen saving other people, when she too needs to be saved.

Throughout the video there is a play on colours, as the blend of black and purple on one hand implies the death or loss of someone; while on the other the purple shows a softer side of the superhero and the black represents her strength.

The video starts off with a somewhat sixties feel, and then it gradually channels Jenny From The Block to climax with a futuristic Dark Angel/Matrix vibe.

The colours and the set-up of the video complement the song. The storyline is easily followed quite well through both the lyric of the song and music video.
