Gayle labels innings defeat a disaster
BRISBANE, Australia (CMC) – West Indies captain Chris Gayle has branded his side’s innings loss to Australia inside three days in the first Test as a disaster and says his wounded side needs to rebound quickly.
Gayle was among the chief culprits, failing twice in the game as West Indies were dismissed for 228 and 187, to slip to an innings and 65-run defeat at the Gabba.
“I’m very disappointed at the batting in both innings, they (batsmen) didn’t come off,” Gayle said following the humbling loss which put Australia up 1-0 in the three-Test series.
“Apart from Adrian (Barath) and his second-innings century, a brilliant innings, he batted well and showed a lot of character.”
West Indies resumed the third day on 134 for five but apart from Travis Dowlin who top-scored with 62 and Denesh Ramdin who got a near run-a-ball 54 from 55 balls, they were dismissed still 252 runs in arrears.
Aussie captain Ricky Ponting enforced the follow on and West Indies were bundled out cheaply, despite a scintillating century from teenaged debutant opener Adrian Barath who hammered a stroke-filled 104.
Gayle said West Indies needed to recover quickly, especially with the second Test starting in Adelaide on Friday.
“We need to rebound from this three-day disaster before the next Test,” Gayle said.
“I am very disappointed with the batting in both innings. We will just have to go back to the nets and rebuild for the second Test match.
“There has been a lot of ups and downs over the past 18 months and we lost some key players leading up to the Test.”
The embattled captain vowed, however, not to bow under the pressure of the heavy defeat.
“No captain wants to lose. You have to be a strong individual in these circumstances,” he said.
“You tell yourself you can do it and you try and lift the players. It is a tough situation but I have been around long enough to know how to handle these situations.”
