Deadly Waterloo intersection
A Peugot motor car and a Toyota Hiace van collided at the Waterloo Road and South Avenue intersection in the wee hours of Sunday morning, sending at least three people to hospital.
According to the police report, while there were serious injuries to people in both vehicles, up to this Wednesday no one died resulting from the tragic accident.
The deadly intersection has been the scene of many horrific crashes leaving a string of wrecked vehicles and dead or incapacitated individuals.
While the cause of this latest collision is uncertain, motorists turning right from Waterloo Road on to South Avenue have long complained about the danger because of the absence of a turning light.
However, head of the Traffic Division DSP Radclliffe Lewis tells Auto that turning right at the intersection is actually illegal.
“It is not supposed to be done,” Lewis emphasised. “Drivers are supposed to continue straight along Waterloo Road.”
Lewis suggests that motorists going into the uptown plaza area instead turn right at the West King’s House road traffic light where there is a filter lane.
“I can’t understand why people would pass the West Kings House intersection and come to turn at South Avenue where it is more difficult,” Lewis commented.
He warned that because of the increasing number of collisons at the intersection police will be deployed to enforce the no right turn rule.
