Technocrats, Vikings cop UWI Invit’l tourney
FEMALE volleyball club Technocrats from Trinidad and Tobago created a major upset at the weekend when they beat defending champions UWI “A” in the final of the 4TH Annual UWI Pelican Invitational Tournament at the UWI Bowl.
Technocrats, led by MVP Kelly-Anne Billingy, came away with a 3-1 victory, stunning the host and title favourites, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-21.
The epic battle was a testament to the high quality of volleyball that was on display; however, it was the Trinidadians who walked away with the US $1,000 winning prize.
In the play-off for third and fourth places, MOSA got the better of GC Foster College, 2-1, 25-13, 22-25, 15-13.
The male final also saw another overseas entrant making their mark. However, Bahamian club Scotia Defenders could not make it two upsets on the day, as defending champions Vikings prevailed once again following a 3-1 victory.
The Vikings were led by a stellar display from MVP Mark Lewis to come away 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 31-29 victors. In the process they collected the winner’s prize of US $1,000.
The UWI ‘A’ male team was not to be undone as they claimed third place with a 25-18, 29-27 win over Trinidadian outfit Technocrats.
The tournament, which was staged by the UWI Volleyball Club under the auspices of the UWI Sports Department, was a huge success, according to club president Dr Ricardo Chong.
“The weekend was a fun-filled one with keen competition. It goes to show that top quality volleyball is played in this region and it can only grow from strength to strength in the coming years,” he said.
