In the nick of time!
A last-gasp Daemion Benjamin header in the 93rd minute gave Boys’ Town a hard-fought 1-0 win over a Rivoli United to keep them in touch with the Digicel Premier League leaders.
Boys’ Town, with their sixth win of the season, now move to 23 points – five behind new leaders Harbour View and three behind joint second-placed teams Tivoli Gardens and St Georges.
St Catherine-based Rivoli United slipped a spot to ninth on 13 points and coach Bradley Stewart must be haemorrhaging after their failure to capitalise on the one-man advantage for over a hour.
Home team Boys’ Town played with 10 men for 63 minutes after Anthony Bennett was red carded by referee Gregory Daley for abusive language to his teammate in the 15th minute.
Rivoli substitute Abayoumi D’Aquilar, who came on in the 76th minute, was sent packing by Daley two minutes later after he clattered into Dean Thompson in the 78th to level the number.
But Boys’ Town, like they did against Harbour View on Sunday when playing with 10 men, showed courage and unlike that game, they deservedly found the winner in stoppage time.
Right wing-back Xavean Virgo whipped in a right-sided cross which beat everyone except Benjamin at the back post, who duly nodded home to send the small crowd into ecstasy.
It was a deserved win for Boys’ Town who, even when playing with one man less, never looked out of sorts and were never stretched by a poor Rivoli display.
Boys’ Town started out brightly and should have scored in the opening 30 seconds, but Shane Edwards – who unbelievably missed an empty net against Harbour View on Sunday – was again off target from just inside the box.
That set the tone for the majority of the game with Boys’ Town being the more guilty party with a series of missed chances.
Peter Keyes, Virgo, Edwards, and Michael Campbell missed fairly easy chances and a few Wayne Ellis headers were cleared off the line.
For Rivoli, the chances were not coming, but in the 88th minute, substitute Garfield Reid brought the best out of goalkeeper Kirk Porter with a screaming 35-metre drive.
National striker and the competition’s leading goalscorer, Devon Hodges, was kept quiet by Asrick Samuels throughout and failed to add to his eight-goal tally.
But just when the game looked to be heading to a draw, Benjamin popped up to nod home a Virgo cross in the final of three minutes of added time.
