August Town hold TG 0-0
IN a game more remarkable for the drama between two opposing players, a skirmish in the stands, the lack of uniformed policemen and no ball boys than the 0-0 result, August Town came out smiling at the end.
It was not referee’s Oneal Clayton finest hour, but August Town’s coach Calvert Fitzgerald rated his team’s performance as “excellent”.
“In the first round we got 4-1 from Tivoli and we have only 13 senior players available as we went to the Under-21 ranks… From the start of this round we have not conceded a goal in open play. In the first round we conceded a whole chuck load of goals.
“In this round (of) four games we drew two and lost two 1-0 on penalties, so we are definitely showing improvement,” Fitzgerald added.
Tivoli’s coach Lenworth Hyde Sr noted that August Town were defending from the start of the game in an effort to grab a point.
“It was tough for us to penetrate and they played well to get a point from the game. We should have created more chances, but when a team packs their defence line with 10 men, it’s hard to penetrate,” Hyde pointed out.
Tivoli’s Rupert Murray and August Town’s Aphas Bernard’s close encounters in the first half ended with Referee Clayton sending both players to the dressing room seconds before the break.
As Murray departed, he was taunted by a handful of August Town spectators, which annoyed some of the Tivoli supporters. However, a possible ‘showdown’ was quickly averted.
Soon one uniformed policeman joined a jeepful of soldiers on the south side outside the field. However, match commissary Norman Blair said he was satisfied with the measures in place.
