Urban schools in netball semi-final clashes
TEAMS are expected to be on the hunt for places in the finals of the 2009 Digicel/ISSA Urban Area High Schoolgirls Junior and Senior Leagues competition this afternoon at the Leila Robinson Courts, starting at 12:30.
The two Junior League semi-finals on are Vauxhall High versus Camperdown High at 12:30 pm and The Queen’s School versus St Hugh’s at 1:15.
In the Senior League semi-finals, Tarrant High face St Andrew High at 1:50 pm and St Hugh’s tackle The Queen’s at 2:30.
So far, there are only two teams that are still unbeaten coming into today’s semi-finals – The Queen’s in the Juniors and Tarrant High in the Seniors.
With the semi-finals expected to be much tougher and challenging than the second round, coaches have to make certain they field their strongest line-ups or they might well end up suffer humiliating defeats.
The Queen’s, who are hot favourites to capture this year’s Junior League title, is definitely the team to watch as the 2007 champions have been winning their matches by wide margins.
The Marvette Anderson-coached Queen’s captured the Junior League title in 2007 but lost it in 2008. They are expected to have a tough match with the Phillip St Marie-coached St Hugh’s whose only loss was to Vauxhall.
Vauxhall’s coach, Rohan Robinson, should get by Camperdown and in the process book their place in the final. Despite Robinson’s Senior team, which was the defending champion, suffering five consecutive defeats from as many games, he will be concentrating much on victory for the Juniors.
Coach of Camperdown, Wayne Stewart, said he gives Vauxhall the edge as they are a much more rounded team, but they will be no pushovers.
Although giving his opponents the edge, Stewart said: “The players will not be sitting back and allowing Vauxhall to walk over them. I’m coming also to win as my opponents will be doing likewise.”
Stewart’s team has only lost only one game this season, and that defeat came in the second round.
Cecile Knight, coach of Tarrant, said she is taking it a game at a time and will not predict victory.
“I’ve watched St Andrew play in the second round and I know they can play and their attack is strong. If we are to win our semi-finals, it must be from the centre circle.
“Netball has so many rules and the umpires are the ones who officiates the game and make the necessary calls. However, the girls are well prepared for this encounter and should pull it off,” Knight added
Tarrant have the service of National Senior goalshooter Samantha Whyte in their team and has been instrumental in their unbeaten run this season. She has also been at the helm of the team, playing in several positions such as goal defence, goalkeeper and goal attack.
