One day at a time
MATTHEW 6: 34 and PSALMS 11:24: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” When we worry about tomorrow, will it change circumstances or situations, will it change hearts or minds and will it give us favour with God or man? The answer to all these questions is emphatically No!
However, worry will cause physical, emotional and spiritual stress. Our sense of direction becomes distorted, our goals become hazy, we are short-tempered, disagreeable and no fun to be with. So it really is ludicrous to worry about a day that we have not, or may not even witness. The negative effects far outweigh the positive. In fact, there are really no positives. We are well advised to take Jesus up on His offer to cast all our cares on Him, because He cares for us.
We should acknowledge that each day is indeed a gift from God and start each day thanking Him. When we make a concerted decision to be joyful at the beginning of each day, God is faithful to honour His word and He becomes our source of strength and wisdom for the day. With God we can face all challenges of the day. We just need to allow Him to handle them.
Now, not worrying does not by any means suggest that we should not assume responsibility for our actions or assignments or those entrusted to our care. Rather, we should live each day with integrity, leaving room for improvement and productivity. In doing this, we would have gained both God’s and man’s favour and would also have facilitated character growth. So then let’s rejoice and be glad in today!
Eternal Father, thank You for Your unchanging character that allows us new mercies each day to become “overcomers” with You. We as a nation declare our heartfelt love for You and refuse to disobey Your word but will remain steadfast trusting in You, our present help in every need, our Rock and our Salvation.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
