Aussies plot ouster of Chanderpaul
BRISBANE, Australia (CMC) – Australia have hatched a plan which they hope will thwart prolific West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the upcoming three-Test series.
Their faster bowlers will be concentrating on “bouncing out” the dogged left-hander after they struggled to get the better of him when the two teams last clashed in the Caribbean last year.
“We couldn’t (get him out]. I think the wickets here will help a little bit more. The wickets we played on in the Caribbean just didn’t bounce at all,” captain Ricky Ponting said.
“The way he plays, his technique, the ball bouncing on him will be something that he mightn’t cope with as well. When you’ve got (Mitchell) Johnson, (Peter)Siddle and (Ben) Hilfenhaus and (Doug) Bollinger in your squad, guys who get a little bit more bounce out of the track, then hopefully we can look like getting him out. Because we didn’t look like getting him out last time.”
In the three-Test series the Windies lost 2-0, Chanderpaul piled up an amazing 442 runs at an average of 147, with two centuries and three half-centuries in six innings.
He is once again expected to be the mainstay of the Caribbean side’s innings, as part of the experienced trio that includes captain Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan.
Siddle said he expected a tough battle against Chanderpaul and was looking to the Gabba pitch to provide the bounce needed to intimidate the Guyanese batsman.
“We’re all pretty aggressive bowlers, especially myself and Mitchell. We’ll look to get at him and try to intimidate him,” Siddle said.
Siddle, who has recovered in time from injury for the opening Test starting Thursday, said he believed once Australia got Chanderpaul and the key Windies batsmen early the remainder of the line up would struggle.
