Cornwall College seek to extend lead in KFC basketball
SAV-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – Double defending champions Cornwall College will this afternoon seek to extend their leads in either section of the ISSA/KFC Western Conference High schools’ basketball championships when they take on Mannings School in Sav-la-Mar today.
Cornwall College are coming off two big wins over William Knibb Memorial in Martha Brae on Friday and will start favourites over Mannings in either section.
The Under-19 game will be a repeat of last season’s final that was won by Cornwall College, while in the Under-16 section, Cornwall College will take a perfect three-game win record up against a Mannings team that has lost all four games played so far.
Cornwall lead the Under-16 section with six points, like Herbert Morrison who have played four games; Muschett High is next on five points, William Knibb and Mannings are on four points each, while Rhodes Hall are on two points from their one win.
Cornwall are on seven points in the Under-19 section with seven points from four games, followed by Herbert Morrison and William Knibb on six points; Mannings and Muschett are on five each with Spot Valley on four.
On Friday, Peter Reid had a quadruple double for Cornwall College’s Under-19 team with 16 points, 17 rebounds, 10 steals and 12 assists along with seven block shots to lead Cornwall to a 81-53 win.
Christopher Smith led the scoring with 26 points , nine rebounds, three blocks and five assists while Gavin Brown scored 15 points and had 10 assists.
Raymond Bowers scored 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Orville Ennis had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for Knibb who were always playing catch up as they trailed by 13 points 8-21 after the first quarter and were down by 15 at half-time 33-18.
In the first game of the double header, Robert McIntosh’s 28 points, 12 rebounds, nine steals and eight assists led Cornwall to their 97-30 win.
Cornwall jumped out to a big lead after just one quarter as they were up by 21 points 28-7 and never relented as they increased the lead to 34 points 54-20 at half time.
Then lead was 44 points after the third quarter as Cornwall was up 74-30 and then shut out the William Knibb team for the fourth quarter.
In addition to McIntosh, Cornwall got goods contributions from Tevin Brown who scored 14 points while John Audley Jackson scored 13 points and had 20 rebounds.
Alpha Wright had 12 points and 17 rebounds for William Knibb while Shevaughn Reid scored 10 points.
