Bridgmohan moves into third after double
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) – Shaun Bridgmohan kept up the pressure on the leading jockeys at Churchill Downs, when he collected a double on Saturday’s race card.
The Jamaican jockey moved to third place with 14 wins -six adrift of current leader Calvin Borel, and two behind second-placed Julien Leaparoux.
Bridgmohan struck in the US$17,170 third race over 1,400 metres on the dirt, when he drew clear late aboard on 9-5 favourite Lone Cypress to finish in a time of one minute, 24.20 seconds.
Lone Cypress, a three-year-old, brown colt, was reserved three wide before Bridgmohan angled him out for the drive when rallying to finish 1-1/4 lengths clear.
Bridgmohan then grabbed a 1-1/2 length victory on the 3-2 favourite Jackpot Joanie in the US $46,000 seventh race over 1,600m.
Jackpot Joanie, a two-year-old, bay filly, remained within striking distance three wide of the leaders through the early fractions before Bridgmohan advanced him in that path after 1,000m, took over once in the stretch, and drew clear under steady urging for a time of 1 min, 38.50 secs.
