Miss Ruth obliges in Overnight feature
Miss Ruth returned to the track after a seven-month absence to score a narrow win in a $715,000 Overnight Allowance race to open her winning account as a three-year-old at Caymanas Park yesterday.
It was not the quality performance expected of such a talent, but well-ridden by Shane Ellis, Miss Ruth, installed the 1-9 favourite, rallied strongly in the final 100 metres to out-duel First Time Lucky, a 9-2 bet under Paul Francis, close home to get the neck win in the nine-horse field of maiden Overnight Allowance horses, three-year-olds and upward.
Trained by Percy Hussey for mother Ruth and carrying top weight of 52.0kg, Miss Ruth ran 1,000 metres straight in a brisk 59.1 for victory.
First Lady, the mount of Jason Simpson, who was prominent throughout, finished third at odds of 9-1 with the 25-1 chance La’s Dancer completing the frame.
Elsewhere on the 10-race card, A Taste Of Orileys, Felicidad and Simple Sweet shared the three trophy races.
In the principal feature, A Taste Of Orileys won the $630,000 Impulse Energy Mile by four lengths after first-past-the-post Queen Nerissa was disqualified in the stewards’ room for an infringement at the off.
Following the disqualification of the winner, A Taste Of Orileys at odds of 5-1 and ridden by Jodeien Anderson, finished second but was promoted to first after the colours of the even money favourite Queen Nerissa were lowered with Ameth Robles astride.
Latent Power, a 7-2 chance ridden by Ansley Dancel, who finished third, was promoted to second, with Queen Nerissa dropping to third following her interference to Latent Power at the start.
Trained by Gary Griffiths for owner Eric V Martin, A Taste Of Oriley ran 1,600 metres in 1:45.2 in a 10-horse field for Restricted Allowance 11 native-bred three-year-olds and upward NW2.
Felicidad, the 3-4 favourite, showed superior speed to his rivals to win the $500,000 Champion Betting/CTL Claiming Series #2 Race #5 by 5 1⁄2 widening lengths.
Ridden by Paul Francis, Felicidad, a known specialist for the distance, ran 1,000 metres straight in 59.4 for victory in the eight-horse field for $250,000 – $210,000 three-year-olds and upward who have started for a tag of $220,000 or less since July 21.
Trained by Fitznahum Williams, Felicidad was owned by Shawn A Abrahams. Simple Sweet, a 5-2 chance, then called curtains with a fighting victory in the $492,000 Alty McKenzie Memorial Cup, ridden by Jason Simpson.
