Mixed fortunes for Mannings in Western Conference basketball champs
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – Mannings’ basketball suffered mixed fortunes on Thursday as the ISSA/KFC Western Conference boys high school championships continued.
The Under-19 team scored their second straight win, beating Spot Valley High, 50-40, but their Under-16 team lost for the fourth straight time, beaten by debutants Rhodes Hall, 37-30.
In the Under-19 section, Mannings took a big first-half lead, 29-17, and despite being outscored in the second half, held on for the win that pushed them to five points – the same as defending champions Cornwall College, Muschett High and William Knibb Memorial – and one points behind leaders Herbert Morrison. Spot Valley are on four points.
Troy Reid’s 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals led Mannings, while Adrian McCallum scored 10 points and Andre Davids got six points.
Nicholas Smith scored 19 points for Spot Valley.
In the Under-16 game, Rhodes Hall came from behind to score a win in the first game as Mannings led 8-4 after the first quarter and 13-11 at half-time.
Rhodes Hall, however, came back in the third quarter to outscore the host school, 14-7, to take the lead at 25-20. They increased the lead in the fourth quarter to run out easy winners.
