Girlz win again
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Jamaica Under-20 Reggae Girlz produced another disappointing display, despite beating St Kitts & Nevis, 2-0, for their second win in the CFU final round World Cup qualifiers at the Mervin Lee Stadium here yesterday.
Kemesha Woodfine opened the scoring for the Girlz after three minutes, and substitute Semone Honeghan netted the second in the 71st.
The win put Jamaica on six points, which virtually puts them through to the CONCACAF round to be played in January.
However, coach Vin Blaine was disgusted with his team’s performance and insists they cannot beat Trinidad if they continue to play at that level.
It took the Jamaicans just three minutes to get on the scoresheet, after the St Kitts defence failed to deal with Jamila Campbell-Henny’s cross, and the lurking Woodfine toed home the loose ball from three yards to give the Reggae Girlz the lead.
However, thereafter the Jamaicans failed to spark, despite the lack of quality opponents.
Teashian Thomas almost got the second goal five minutes later when goalkeeper Jasmin Jarvis dropped a catch, but the latter obstructed Thomas’ path to the ball.
Caroline Springer produced St Kitts’ first chance with a good strike which went wide of the upright in the 10th minute.
But as the Jamaican continued to struggle to get their game together, Tasheka Small hit a shot just wide of the mark in the 17th minute.
Tasheka Gordon then came close with a header from a corner five minutes later.
But the chances were rare, and Jamaica did not threaten the St Kitts goal again until the 34th minute when Campbell-Henny shot over the bar from inside the area.
Meanwhile, in the 41st minute, Sashana Campbell hit a fierce, low shot that went just wide of the target.
St Kitts responded through Phonetia Browne, who dribbled by two defenders before firing wide with only goalkeeper Sasha-Gaye Spence to beat.
Woodbine had a great opportunity to score just before the break after cutting inside a defender from the right, but she lifted her shot high from six yards.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Campbell curled a shot over the bar from the edge of the box, and then forced Jarvis into a diving save with another shot from outside the area a minute later.
But the Girlz fell back into their lacklustre mood again for the next 10 minutes and got no clear sight on goal.
On the hour mark Woodfine broke through and picked out Thomas, but she hesitated and was robbed by the St Kitts defence.
In the 66th minute, the Jamaicans were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the box, but Cathryn Roger shot over the bar from 12 yards.
Substitute Honeghan eventually added a second goal with a superb diving header from Woodfine’s cross in the 68th after replacing Thomas Nugene Nugent also came close with a good, low shot 15 minutes from time, after being set up by Carter, as the Jamaicans improved slightly with the introduction of Trudi Carter in the midfield.
Honeghan also had a good penalty appeal turned down in the 85th after a fine piece of skill got her inside the box, while Campbell rattled the crossbar a little later with a shot from just inside the box.
But despite getting into a lot of dangerous positions late in the match, the Jamaicans’ play in and around the area left a lot to be desired.
Gordon had the final chances to notch another goal at the end, but she skewed her shot wide from 18 yards.
Blaine said this performance was even worse than their display against Cuba.
“We have to get it together because the way we play cannot beat Trinidad, I can garuantee that, so there’s a lot of work to do,” he said.
“We’re experimenting, but now I think we need to start a team that can compete and we will have to make some drastic changes,” he added.
He also cited the fact that the girls were out of camp.
“The team needs some work so we have to have them for longer because for the past two weeks we only had the team for three days prior to their departure and we have to gel and understand each other,” he said.
St Kitts’ coach Lester Morris thought his team should have come away with something from the game.
“Jamaica were the better team… but if the girls had stuck to the gameplan it would have been a better game for us, in my estimation,” he stated.
Meanwhile, utility player Toni Cowan had to be taken to hospital for an allergic reaction which left her eyes swollen and throat itching mid-way through the match.
However, medical personnel at the Medical Associates Hospital demanded money before treating the player, with head of delegation Michael Ricketts still at the game.
As a result, the player was refused treatment and transported back to the stadium unattended. However, she declared that she was feeling much following her return to the match venue.
