Holmwood, Denbigh impress in rural netball
DEFENDING champions Holmwood Technical and former champions Denbigh High chalked up another impressive win as the second round of the Digicel/ISSA Rural Area Schoolgirl Senior netball league got underway at GC Foster College and Rusea’s on Wednesday.
Holmwood and Denbigh have so far registered their fourth consecutive win and lead Groups 1 and 2, respectively, with one game remaining for the completion of the second round.
The Carlene Graham-coached Holmwood, who have won the Senior League for the past five years, trounced St Mary’s High, 55-13, while the Christine Bartley-coached Denbigh whipped Frome Technical, 39-13.
Also looking good to qualify for next Tuesday’s quarter-final knock-out were Manchester High from Group 2, who have convincingly won four consecutive matches. On Wednesday, Manchester brushed aside St Hilda’s, 45-20.
Tacius Golding have so far recorded four straight wins from as many starts in the second round to lead Group 3 after defeating Seaforth High, 35-11.
Meanwhile in the Junior League, former champions Holmwood and Denbigh are the early leaders of Group 1 and 4 after both won their fourth match in their respective second-round groups to reach the quarter-final KO.
Holmwood crushed St Mary High, 43-5, while Denbigh defeated Manning’s, 17-10. Manchester from Group 2 won four games and also booked their place in the quarter-finals with four straight wins. They scored a 21-6 win over Aabuthnott Gallimore.
The tussle for top spot in Group 1 is between defending champions Herbert Morrison and Bellefield. The Bellefield aggregation defeated Islington, 21-13, while Herbert Morrison gained a walk-over against no-shows Edwin Allen.
Other winners in the Senior League were STETHS who outscored Manning’s, 29-21; Kemp’s Hill who beat Anchovy, 38-24; Bishop Gibson who topped Albert Town, 33-18; Hampton who outscored Irwin, 29-18, and Titchfield who beat Charlemont, 37-18.
Tacky and Belair drew 19-19, while Herbert Morrison and William Knibb gained walk-overs against Clarendon and Edwin Allen.
In the Junior League, Black River High beat Frome, 18-10; May Day beat Ocho Rios, 19-16; Titchfield beat Guy’s Hill, 18-16; Anchovy and STETHS tied 13-13, while Herbert Morrison and MoBay High gained walk-overs against Edwin Allen and Clarendon.
