Bollinger in Aussie squad to face Windies
MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC) – Australia’s selectors have called up left-arm pace bowler Doug Bollinger in a 12-man squad to face West Indies in the opening Test next Thursday at the Gabba.
The 28-year-old’s inclusion for just the second Test of his career is the only change to the squad named for the final Ashes Test against England in August.
Bollinger has been rewarded for his outstanding form which saw him snatch nine wickets in four One-Day International matches against India recently.
His selection means there is no place for Stuart Clark, a change chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said had been a difficult one to make.
“Stuart is extremely unlucky to miss selection but we have been very impressed with Doug’s form in the recent ODI series in India and feel he deserves this opportunity in the Australian squad,” Hilditch said.
In his only Test to date, Bollinger finished with the modest match figures of 2-131 as Australia beat South Africa in Sydney.
Clark, Bollinger’s New South Wales teammate, boasts an impressive record with a haul of 94 wickets in 24 Tests at a miserly average of 23.86.
“I just got told I was in the 12, which is fine for me at the moment,” said Bollinger.
“I felt like I bowled really well. I felt like I bowled fast here today (against Tasmania on Thursday).”
While he is unlikely to make the final XI, he joins a pace attack that comprises Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle who has been included after recovering from side injury.
Middle-order batsman Michael Clarke has also recovered from a back strain that kept him out of Australia’s recent trips to the Champions Trophy and India while Mike Hussey has been retained despite struggling during the Ashes.
Australia and West Indies will clash in subsequent Tests at Adelaide Oval (December 4-8) and Perth (December 16-20).
