Journeys Through Jamaica
The Culinary Federation of Jamaica and Devon House celebrated “Journeys Through Jamaica” on Sunday, November 15, 2009 on the south lawn of Devon House. The afternoon attracted Jamaicans from all walks of life who strolled through, exchanged pleasantries, swayed to the sounds of the mento band and marvelled at the vintage car collection.
The children, especially the boys, enjoyed non-stop rides on the go-kart (we spotted a few adults too). The afternoon however truly belonged to our amazing cadre of chefs, many of whom travelled miles to share their extraordinary culinary skills, whipping up the tastiest restaurant fare meets street-side cooking.
Kudos to the Culinary Federation of Jamaica Chairman Bill Moore and Devon House for choosing to promote the unique nature of Jamaican cuisine. Street food is a concept that has worldwide appeal and recognition. It is also a concept that is a niche category of travel and one which the Culinary Federation feels can be an important addition to our tourism offering.
Thursday Food had a great time watching the professionals, the roadside culinarians and amateur enthusiasts adding their unique ingredients and style to each preparation. Congratulations to the sponsors: The Jamaica Observer, The Jamaica Tourist Board, The Jamaica Cultural Development Corporation, Round Hill Hotel & Villas, Sealand International, Best Dressed Chicken, National Meats, Hart Hill, Jus Chill Water, Knutsford Court, The Courtleigh Hotel and The United States Meat Export Federation who gave in cash and kind and truly embraced this astounding venture. Efforts like this not only serve to motivate our chefs but afford yet another platform for our food to be presented to the world. We are as positive as The Culinary Federation of Jamaica that 2010 will bring extraordinary developments to our culinary landscape. Fact is, we need look no further than Team Rock House from that truly formidable property in Negril who copped the award – Best Use of Organic Vegetables.
