Gayle heads home to be with ailing mother
West Indies captain Chris Gayle was scheduled to leave the tour of Australia last night (Jamaica time) to head home to visit his mother who is seriously ill and in hospital.
Team manager Joel Garner indicated that Gayle’s mother was admitted to hospital in Jamaica and her son was granted time off to be with her.
Gayle will miss the four-day first-class match against Queensland Bulls at the Allan Border Field, which was scheduled to start last night (Jamaica time).
Vice-captain Denesh Ramdin will lead the side.
“The management and players in the team as well as the WICB are with Chris and his family at this time. We also want to wish his mother a speedy recovery,” Garner said in a WICB statement.
The West Indies will play three Tests on the tour. The first Test will be at the Gabba in Brisbane on November 26-30; the second Test will be at the Adelaide Oval on December 4-8; and the third Test at the WACA Ground in Perth on December 16-20.
