Delano Franklyn new chair of Michael Manley Foundation
ATTORNEY Delano Franklyn has succeeded trade unionist Danny Roberts as chairman of the Michael Manley Foundation.
The change occurred at the foundation’s annual retreat in New Kingston on February 14, when Roberts, citing his support of the principle of term limits, relinquished the chairmanship which he had held for five years. The executive committee of the foundation then selected Franklyn by acclamation.
Donna Scott-Mottley was selected, also by acclamation, as deputy chairman to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Senator Dwight Nelson to the Cabinet in 2007.
Franklyn is a former chief advisor to former Prime Minister P J Patterson and was later Senator and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade. He is an author and editor with five books to his credit.
Scott-Mottley, also an attorney and a member of the General Legal Council, is a former deputy president of the Senate, as well as a former junior minister in the Ministry of Information & Culture with responsibility for culture.
The Michael Manley Foundation was established in 1998 by a group of individuals – including ambassadors, university professors, senior trade unionists, sports greats, as well as former ministers and press secretaries to former Prime Minister Michael Manley. Incorporated in 1999, the foundation is intended to preserve and promote the political, philosophical and intellectual legacy of Manley, who is regarded as one of Jamaica’s great minds.
The foundation, based in Kingston, has, over the years, implemented three major annual projects:
. awards for community self-reliance;
. distinguished lectures and essay competitions; and
. established a Michael Manley Centre that houses and displays Manley’s documents and memorabilia.
“The mission of the Michael Manley Foundation is to contribute to the building of a better Jamaica and Caribbean by, first, informing the present and future generations of Michael Manley’s life, philosophy and work; and, second, developing educational and community-based projects to continue the quest for individual, community and national self-reliance and for global equality and justice,” notes the foundation on its website.
