NCU VP to launch book on stress in education
DR Gloria Davis-Roberts, vice-president of student development and records at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) will officially launch her book, Stress in Higher Education: A Guide to Understanding Sources and Levels of Stress and Coping Strategies, today.
The launch will take place at the university’s main auditorium.
“The book describes the levels and sources of stress, and coping strategies of faculty and staff at institutions of higher education,” said a release from NCU. “It also seeks to determine if these are related to some selected demographic characteristics. Some of these demographic characteristics include gender, age, marital status, years of employment and employment status.”
The author points out that although it has been argued for some time that workers in academia have found their jobs to be highly satisfying, and in comparison with other occupations, relatively stress free, numerous studies have found high levels of stress in teachers. In this book, the author attempts to isolate the job characteristics and working conditions that are considered most stressful or have the strongest relationships with negative outcomes.
Davis-Roberts invites readers to explore the pages and says that the book should provide information that would help foster the well-being of workers so that they would not be too adversely affected by stress before concerns are addressed. She further points out that to guarantee retention and recruitment in educational institutions, there is need to create this awareness.
