Fire destroys Furniture World
A massive early morning fire razed the Furniture World building and surrounding properties on Slipe Road in Kingston yesterday.
The fire, which is believed to have started inside the furniture store at approximately 7:00 am, completely engulfed all the furniture and equipment before spreading quickly to adjoining premises.
No one was injured in the blaze, but damage is estimated to be approximately $13.5 million.
“This is really sad, persons have even already paid for their furniture and are supposed to pick it up today,” store owner Karen Parker said as she viewed the burnt-out remains of the over 30-year-old family establishment.
Firefighters from York Park Fire Station who responded to the blaze, were unsure how the fire began as the old concrete walls had collapsed.
“It is really hard to say what started the fire right now, as we speak the firemen are trying to find the origin, but right now it is a little hard as the walls of the building collapsed,” District Officer Sheridan Gordon, told the Observer.
