MoBay court office damaged by firebomb
MONTEGO BAY, St James – The police said yesterday that they would be broadening their investigation into the firebombing of the Office of the Clerks of Court in the city, despite theories that someone of unsound mind might have carried out the act.
The court’s office was set on fire early yesterday morning, damaging a few books and furniture, according to Supt Steve McGregor, head of the St James police.
“There is some argument that someone of unsound mind set the fire,” McGregor said yesterday. “But we are taking a broad look at it.”
McGregor said a patrol unit discovered about 4:00 am that the building was on fire and immediately called the fire brigade.
“After they extinguished the fire a bottle bomb (Molotov cocktail) was found inside the office,” McGregor said.
The police superintendent said the police theorised that the bomb was thrown through a window facing the street, into the office of the court.
Court staff were yesterday tightlipped about the bombing and refused to comment on the matter.
According to an Observer source, the court recently implemented a number of security measures due to persistent threats against staff members. Among the new measures were the installation of a metal detector at the entrance to the court offices and courtrooms, as well as the installation of closed-circuit cameras
