PNP steps up election campaign
THE People’s National Party (PNP) will kick-off phase two of its current general election campaign tonight in Bog Walk, St Catherine, following two days of important private discussions at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston.
Party spokesman, Colin Campbell, said that a meeting with all 60 candidates for the election, and their campaign managers at the conference centre yesterday, was aimed at assessing the party’s readiness for the election.
The candidates and delegates were addressed by Prime Minister and party leader, Portia Simpson Miller, as well as her predecessor, P J Patterson.
Campbell said that the process marks the end of the first phase of the campaign which concentrated on the regional level.
He said that the focus would be shifting to the parish and intra-parish levels today, beginning with tonight’s meeting in Bog Walk, which is in support of the seats in northern belt of St Catherine. These would include St Catherine North-East and North-West as well as East and West Central.
“We want to capture all the seats there,” Campbell said.
Asked whether there would be a third phase, Campbell said that he did not know.
The main feature of today’s regular NEC meeting will be the charge from the president, Simpson Miller, which will focus on the preparations for the general elections.
General secretary Donald Buchanan and campaign director, Dr Paul Robertson, will also update the NEC on the party’s readiness.
