Golding accuses gov’t of abandoning the youth
HIGHGATE HALL, Trelawny – Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Bruce Golding has accused the government of abandoning the youths, and at the same time warned JLP representatives not to neglect their constituents when they are elected to office.
” When I look at the problems as I toured constituencies in Portland, St Elizabeth, in Trelawny .the youths appear to be neglected and abandoned and are looking for hope and opportunities,” Golding said.
According to the opposition leader, many of the island’s youths were unable to find jobs as a result of government’s mismanagement of the economy.
Arguing that the youths were desperately in need of a “start in life”, Golding said a JLP government would give them hope and provide them with opportunities.
Urging the JLP’s candidates not to abandon their constituents, Golding blasted politicians who he said neglected their constituencies after being elected.
“You have some politicians who, when they get to power to do your business they go about their own business and you don’t see them again until elections come around again. But, I tell you, you should not neglect the people who give you the power,” Golding said.
He was addressing JLP supporters at Highgate Hall on Thursday night, following a tour of the constituency of South Trelawny.
The JLP leader told the large number of youths in attendance at the meeting never to lose hope, as the party would implement a number of programmes aimed at addressing their hopelessness, should it form the next government.
“.No matter how dark, damp and dreary the jungle might be, if you get to a stage where every step you take you see sunlight then you know that you are on the right road, so the weeping that you have suffered for so long will come to an end soon not just for labourites alone but for all the people of Jamaica,” said Golding.
The JLP’s representative in South Trelawny is Maria Dalrymple-Philibert, who replaced the incumbent JLP MP Devon McDaniel.
McDaniel indicated more than a year ago that he would not seek re-election in the next general election, due next year.
