Flankers, Central Village to get community police stations
THE United States Agency for International Develop-ment (USAID) on Thursday announced plans for the building of two more model community police stations, to be sited in St Catherine and St James.
The announcement comes against the background of the positive reaction and decline in murder since the construction of a model police station and community centre in Grants Pen, once considered one of the most volatile areas in the nation’s capital, Kingston.
Deputy mission director of USAID, James Harmon, said negotiations had begun for construction of the multi-million-dollar state-of-the-art facilities in the volatile communities of Flankers in St James and Central Village in St Catherine.
“We have plans to work with the JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force), AmCham and residents in the communities to expand these projects. We have already begun these activities with our partners,” Harmon said Thursday as Grants Pen celebrated a year of peace.
The community of Flankers is a large impoverished area nestled on the hills outside the city of Montego Bay, and has been designated a ‘hot spot’ by the police.
The proposed model police community station for Central Village is expected to help in bringing peace to Sufferers Heights, Ferry Lane and Spanish Town, among other areas.
No date was announced for the construction of the two model police station.
